Compared to the now ubiquitous “full HD” or 1080p standard, 4K offers twice the linear resolution, or four times as many pixels. To add some extra confusion to the already dodgy video resolutions naming scheme, ‘4K’ refers to the horizontal number of pixels in a typical 2160p image, while the number 2160 actually refers to the maximum number of vertical lines in the image. An absolute resolution specifies the number of pixels per unit of length. The word ‘resolution’ can be used in absolute or relative terms. In theory, an image with a higher resolution has the potential to appear sharper.
